Bridgerton fans, the wait is over — and the next chapter is breaking new ground. Netflix officially announced on March 24 that Season 5 of the beloved Regency romance series will center on Lady Francesca Stirling, played by Hannah Dodd, and Michaela Stirling, played by Masali Baduza. Filming has already begun in the UK. This is a landmark moment for the show: Francesca and Michaela will become Bridgerton’s first ever same-gender romantic lead couple. The Story: Love After Loss Season 5 picks up two years after the death of Lord John Stirling — Francesca’s husband and Michaela’s beloved cousin — whose passing at the end of Season 4 left both women shattered. Now, as Francesca re-enters the marriage market for practical reasons, Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate. What follows is a slow-burn love story full of yearning, grief, and self-discovery. “It feels groundbreaking,” showrunner Jess Brownell said. “To make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.” The season is described as a story about “queer joy” — and Brownell promises “big-time yearning.” The Stars Are Ready Hannah Dodd, who took over the role of Francesca in Season 3, said she is “panicked and excited” about the lead role. Masali Baduza, who joined the show in Season 3 as Michaela in a gender-swapped adaptation of the Michael character from Julia Quinn’s novel When He Was Wicked, described the season as “special.” The two actresses are close friends in real life — which may be exactly why their chemistry already has fans buzzing before a single episode has aired.
