In 44 years of life, Britney Spears had never once been arrested. That changed on the night of Wednesday, March 4, 2026.

Just before 9 p.m., a 911 caller reported a black BMW 430i driving erratically at dangerously high speed on the southbound US-101 Freeway in Ventura County. California Highway Patrol officers pulled the vehicle over near Westlake Boulevard, just miles from her Thousand Oaks home. Behind the wheel was Britney Spears, 44, alone in the car.

What Happened After the Stop

Officers say Spears showed signs of impairment. She was given field sobriety tests, which she failed, and was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs. She was taken to a nearby hospital where blood was drawn to determine her intoxication level. Chemical test results are still pending. Her vehicle was towed. She was booked around 3 a.m. and released just after 6 a.m. the same morning. She has a court appearance scheduled for May 4.

Her Team Breaks Silence

“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” a representative for Spears said. “Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life. Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”

Her rep added that her sons Sean Preston, 20, and Jayden James, 19, would be spending time with her. “Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well being,” the statement continued.

The Weeks Leading Up to the Arrest

The arrest did not come out of nowhere for those watching closely. Reports emerged that Spears had fired her sobriety coach in the weeks prior to the DUI. She had been posting numerous videos of herself dancing alone in her Thousand Oaks home. Her Instagram account was deactivated following the arrest.

Just days before the incident, Spears had won a legal victory: a permanent restraining order against a stalker who had been harassing her since 2013 and showed up at her home in 2025. And only last month, she finalized the sale of her entire music catalog to publisher Primary Wave.

A Life Under the Spotlight

Britney Spears has been one of the most watched figures in pop culture for nearly three decades. From her explosive debut with Baby One More Time to the 13-year conservatorship that stripped her of control over her own life, the Princess of Pop has rarely been out of the headlines. Since the conservatorship ended in 2021, she has lived largely off the public grid. Through a hit-and-run in 2007, multiple welfare checks, and years of speculation about her health, an arrest had never happened. Now that it has, the question everyone is asking is the same one her team already voiced: what happens next?
